This collaboration grew from a conversation between The Vegan Potter and SoulSpace Art about what we wanted for the world. Rather than spiral (yet again) into despair over what is happening in our country, our goal was to create something positive and beautiful that could also do some good. So we did what makers do – we decided to make some things, specifically a hand-woven towel and a hand-built mug inspired by three words.

Slab Prep: Lyndsay Meiklem

We tossed around a number of slogans and catchphrases that felt easy and current (but not quite right). Then Lyndsay turned the entire conversation on its head with one question: what do we want for people? The answer was immediate: Justice, Equity and Security. We believe that a just and equitable system fosters security for its citizens – housing security, food security, health security, job/economic security….and if people feel secure in those areas of their lives, they are more likely to make decisions that are more environmentally sound.

Lyndsay embossed the three words onto her mugs. Christine designed the three words into the borders of her towels with a technique called Name Drafting.*(scroll down to read more about this technique!) The glazes match the yarn colors, spanning the rainbow. We are offering a limited number of mug and towel sets for preorder. $110 plus shipping gets you one mug and one towel in your choice of color. The pre-order will close if we hit capacity early. Items will ship in time for holiday.

A portion of the proceeds will go to The States Project, a progressive PAC supporting state legislative races, which are arguably the first and most important line of defense when it comes to policy changes, yet are the least well-funded. We feel money spent here will go farther and have a bigger impact than the federal races. And state and local elections are generally populated with younger people – the next generation of leaders that we desperately need.

*In Name Drafting, a weaver can use a word, phrase or name, as the basis for a design. It is a playful way to imbue a project with sentiment or a personal statement. Each letter in that word, phrase or name is assigned a number, and then each number is assigned a short threading or treadling sequence. The result is like Morse code on steroids –   more elaborate and harder to crack. The design does not reveal obvious letters or a legible message – that is known only to the designer.
